Western Red Cedar Gable Patio Cover & Harbor Grey Composite Deck

Project Overview

This project combined two of our most popular outdoor living structures into one seamless backyard transformation. The homeowner wanted a shaded entertaining area that felt like a natural extension of their home, with a low-maintenance deck surface that would hold up to the Texas sun without constant staining and sealing.

The Patio Cover

We built a gable-style patio cover using premium western red cedar. The gable design matches the roofline of the home, creating a cohesive look that feels like it was part of the original construction rather than an addition. Western red cedar was chosen for its natural beauty, tight grain, and resistance to insects and rot. The cedar was sealed to protect it from UV damage and extend its life.

The gable roof allows hot air to rise and escape, keeping the patio cooler than a flat roof would. We integrated gutters and downspouts to manage rainwater and protect the deck below.

The Deck

Underneath the patio cover, we installed a composite deck in Harbor Grey — a versatile mid-tone grey that complements the warm cedar above. Composite decking was chosen for its low maintenance: no staining, no sealing, no rotting, no splintering. It will look great for decades with nothing more than an occasional washing.

The deck was designed with clean lines and a picture-frame border for a finished, custom look. We used hidden fasteners so there are no screw heads visible on the surface.
